Koln weather is classified as maritime temperate and is comparatively pleasant and mild all throughout the year. Since the city is located in the Nordrhein-Westfalen lowland region of western Germany, weather in Koln is influenced by burly maritime breezes blowing in from the nearby North Sea and Atlantic Ocean. Another characteristic of Koln weather is the fact that it boasts warm summers, with winters following rather mild patterns.

Average annual precipitation levels are around 760 mm and evenly spread out throughout the year, with monthly averages standing at between 50 to 70 mm. The months during the summer season are usually the wettest, with the majority of precipitation falling during the evenings. However, despite the evening’s rainfall, Koln weather can be relied upon to change dramatically the following day, with the sky clearing and the sun perched over the city.

Koln weather during the summer season – which runs from May right through to September - is graced with mild sunny days, but random wet conditions are usually larking in the background, waiting to make an appearance. Although arriving quickly, the sudden downpours also have the tendency to be rather short in duration, vanishing as quickly as they have appeared. Average daytime temperatures hover between 15°C and 20°C, rising to 25°C or more during the warmest and hottest months of July and August.

Koln weather during winter is characteristically cold and overcast, with average daily temperatures for January staying at between 1°C and 5°C. And if daytime temperatures manage to hold on to a comparatively bearable level, by evening mercury takes a nose dive, hovering around freezing point. It should also be noted though, that despite the prevailing cold, weather in Koln during winter is considered to be amongst the warmest conditions Germany has to offer during this season. Finally, although patterns can at times feel bitterly cold, snowfall is rather scarce and short lived.
